The Human Capsule serves a dual purpose:
- To act as a sealed backup for our species in the face natural and manmade threats
- To serve as a permanent test bed for the first moon and mars colonies.
TO BE WISE ENOUGH TO PROTECT WHAT WE HAVE,
YET BOLD ENOUGH TO VENTURE OUT INTO THE UNKNOWN.
Less than 20 people who arrived on the island of Tristan da Cunha 200 years ago are the ancestors of the entire current 245 person population. This establishes a lower bound for the minimum viable population of the human race. With this in mind, the crew size of the Human Capsule has been fixed at 20 people.
